Shogi Variants
--------------
This is Beta version 1.1 of a program which can be used to referee
games between human players for any of 12 ancient variants of Shogi (the
Japanese member of the chess family).
There is no computer player in this version. A computer player and modem
support will (hopefully) be developed for a future Shareware version.
This program may be freely distributed as long as none of the files are
modified in any way.
System Requirements
-------------------
Shogi Variants runs under Windows 3.1 (or higher) and will require a 486SX
or better machine with at least 4 meg of RAM. It is designed to use a 256
colour display. While the program can be run with 16 colours it looks much
better with 256. On some systems using the Standard Windows 256 colour
drivers will result in problems with the graphics (such as black lines on
the left hand side of the pieces). These problems should not occur if the
appropriate 256 colour drivers for the graphics card are used.
To play the largest variant (Grand Shogi) an 800x600 screen resolution is
required and 8 meg of RAM is preferable.
As it is a Visual Basic program Shogi Variants requires VBRUN300.DLL to run.
Version History
---------------
Version 1.1 contains a number of bugfixes/changes from Version 1.0 which was
released in January 1996.
The changes include:
- errors in the initial set-up for Middle Shogi have been fixed.
- errors in recognizing the end of the game when Crown Princes and
Kings/Emperors are in play in the larger variants have been fixed.
- 2 more variants (Heian Shogi and Little Shogi) have been added to
to the program.
- a new improved opening screen (with load game options) has been
included.
- The game clocks can now be turned on and off.
- A number of other small bugs fixed and cosmetic changes have
been made.
